Notes: A code of -99 indicates a missing value. Area 69
is not included in the data (Germany without Alsace &
Lorraine). Thus the area id's range from 1 to 68, 70 to 72.
(+) Proportion of entire population dependent on primary industry
is not available for 1871 because in the census it was calculated
differently than for the other years given.
(*) Variable 46 attributes to the RB Potsdam and Berlin the percentage
illiterate for their combined results as were given in the statistics.
it attributes to the 4 areas of Baden the figure for Grossh, to the
3 areas of Oldenburg the result for Grossh, and to the 3 areas of
Elsass-Loth the result for Reichsl.
Note: "Baden", "Oldenburg", and "Elsass-Loth" are not
identified in the data. Baden probably consists of Konstanz,
Freiburg, Karlsruhe and Mannheim. These are adjacent in the data,
and have the same value for variable 46 (and they're in the right
part of Germany). Oldenburg is almost certainly H. Oldenburg, F.
Lubeck and F. Birkenfeld. Elsass-Loth is almost certainly
Unterelsass, Oberelsass and Lothringen. The only difficulty is that
the four areas tentatively identified as Baden have a different value
of variable 46 from the three areas tentatively identified as
Oldenburg, while the codebook states that they all should have the
value for Grossh. There is no area with a name resembling Grossh in
the data.
(**) for 1925 and 1933, administrative districts 2,10, 69,70,
and 71 were not part of Germany.
Note: It appears that the variables labelled "proportion"
have three decimal places, while those labelled "percent" have one
decimal place.
